Save those eyes, they’re the only one’s you have!
Today on Alternative Health it’s all about the eye. No matter what age, you can do something nutritionally to make your eye sight better. And what better than the God given foods and natural medicines he has prepared for us! There’s a scripture in Psalms 103 that says, “He satisfies our mouth with good things so that our youth is renewed like the eagles” So what did God call good? Well, the precursor to the promise is to eat good so that our youth be renewed and part of youthful health is good vision.
I know for me personally my eyes were more than perfect until after my 8th child and I passed 40 and way too much time writing on the computer. Yikes!!!
Well, if you’re like me and just don’t want to give into the glasses or the contacts or worse, surgery! Today’s show is for you!
Do you have trouble with your eyes?
The numbers are clear, poor eyesight seems to be in epidemic proportion. Including 7 out of my 8 children. My own husband has a lens transplant in his right eye and has had numerous eye disorders since he was 7 years old. I have strained mine so much working on computers, to the point, that without glasses I have to have someone else read the menu to me! OK, so no doubt there’s a problem, what’s the deal?
Well, please let me start off by shocking you!
Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (an ingredient in almost all Shampoos and soaps) may cause damage to the eyes and possibly blindness especially in children- this occurs as a result of Sodium Lauryl Sulfate damaging the proteins in the eyes. Sodium Lauryl Sulfate does not have to come into contact with the eyes for this effect to occur. It readily permeates the skin through the scalp and then travels to the eyes where it causes damage. So read labels and run from this known carcinogen.
And here’s another shocker, the use of Sunglasses impairs the absorption of the Electromagnetic Radiation that is contained in sunlight from entering the eyes (and preventing its subsequent stimulation of the manufacture of melatonin in the pineal gland).
And what does that mean??? Get sun, it’s good for your eyes, good for your sleep, good for cholesterol, etc…
And here’s one for you, Viagra causes (temporary) problems with eyesight in some people. Most people who have experienced vision problems after using Viagra describe a phenomena characterized by a bluish colored tinge around objects that they focus on and an over-sensitivity to light.
Chromium deficiency may cause poor eyesight.
Iron deficiency may cause a blue tinge around the whites of the eyes.
Liver disorders can cause various issues with the eyes including causing floaters.
Fluorescent Light - especially cool white fluorescent light is associated with eye inflammations.
Exposure to Chlorine can cause corneal loss to the eyes. So think about those swimming pools & hot tubs.
And here’s a shocker, all you people taking Saint John's Wort hear this, in excess it can cause severe inflammation of the mucous membranes of the eyes. And too much salt can do anything from cataracts to Glaucoma…
And how about this one…excessive circulating glucose damages the retina of the eye. What does that mean??? Stop the sugar addiction. You not only effect your immune, make your waste line grow, but you lose your sight along with it!
And then there is the night time friend of many, the faithful lap top!
Now, while I could go on and on and on about eye issues, I want to get to the solutions!
FOOD FOR THE EYES:
Blueberries alleviate some eye ailments and restore visual acuity. Bilberry alleviates many eye afflictions by improving blood supply to the eyes.
Chamomile (compress applied topically to the eyes) soothes the eyes and helps them to heal (due to anti-inflammatory properties of Chamomile).
Lemon Grass (tea) improves the general health of the eyes.
Fenugreek Seeds improve the general health of the eyes as well as clearing the lungs, it is an awesome expectorant.
Carrot (juice) guards against eye infections.
Fennel claims to clear, “beautify” the eyes and also to improve vision.
Lavender (tea used as a compress to bathe the eyes topically) is claimed to alleviate bloodshot eyes. Marshmallow that is the herb of course, (infusions used as an eye wash) eliminates the redness associated with bloodshot eyes.
Raspberry Leaf (cool tea applied topically as a compress) alleviates irritation.
Grape seed strengthens the capillaries.
Raw Potato (sliced and applied with pressure topically to the eyes) is said to eliminate red, soar aching eyes, and even styes.
What else is good for the eyes? Well, let’s go and find out.
Ok, so we know some of the issues, some of the foods to incorporate, and some herbs to put on or in your body. What else will make me see better is all I wanna know!
Ok, here we go:
Taurine is essential for optimal sight due to its role in the maintenance of the health of the retina. And what is that, it is an amino acid.
Collagen is vital, I take it at night, liquid collagen is a precursor to HGH and many people increasing their HGH through increasing collagen report improvement in their eyesight (both near and far, in the daytime as well as night-time).
Pregnenolone may improve eyesight (according to anecdotal reports describing an improvement in the clarity of vision after using supplemental Pregnenolone.
Alpha-Linolenic Acid (LNA) is essential for proper sight - studies have shown that after only four weeks of LNA deficiency, dramatic changes occur in the retina of the eyes - for example it can take up to ten times more light before the retina responds to light in the presence of LNA deficiency (this occurs as a result of insufficient LNA being available for conversion to (DHA), the Fatty Acid that is actually operative in the retina). Supplemental (DHA) facilitates and improves sight (due to its essential role in the optimal functioning of the retina).
Carnosine (N-Acetyl-Carnosine eye drops applied topically) improves eyesight.
OPC’s improve everything including various aspects of sight. OPC’s, of course, are those wonderful nutrients found in grape seeds!
Vitamin C is essential to the eyes and is a very powerful anti-oxidant.
Selenium is a trace mineral that is excellent for everything that could possibly ail you including your eyes.
Now, here’s my favorite God-given eye supplement.
Lutein a Carotenoid found in Algae, Eggs, Honeydew Melons, Kiwi,
Mango, Oranges, Papaya, Peaches, Prunes, Butter Beans, Broccoli,
Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Green Beans, Kale, Lettuce, pumpkin,
Red Capsicum, Spinach, Squash, watercress, Sweet Potato, Corn, Tomato, and Celery, to name a few!
Are you getting enough from these foods? It’s highly unlikely since most of us do not eat enough fresh foods as it is. So it is best to supplement. Now, while helping your eyes, lutein is good for all kinds of stuff!
Lutein helps to prevent atherosclerosis. It helps to prevent Age-Related Macular Degeneration. It protects against the development of Cataracts (by protecting the cells of the eyes from light-generated free radicals). Lutein may help to prevent Glaucoma. (Lutein helps to protect the optic nerve from damage and sub-optimal levels of lutein in the optic nerve may be an early symptom of glaucoma). Lutein concentrates in the lens of the eyes.
Lutein concentrates in and improves the health of the Macula (yellow spot on back) of the retina of the eyes (it is particularly concentrated in the rods of the eyes). Lutein daily (20-40 mg.)improves vision in Retinitis Pigmentosa patients.
It is also said to help to prevent Breast Cancer, Colon Cancer, Lung Cancer and reduce the risk of Prostate Cancer.
Lutein is a powerful antioxidant, and lutein potently deactivates Singlet Oxygen Free Radicals. Lutein protects the body against the oxidation of LDL Cholesterol, the bad kind of cholesterol.
Lutein also protects the retina of the eye from the toxic effects of exposure of the retina to sunlight. Now we need sunlight but there are good and bad effects so while getting the tan and feeling good, and helping your eyes, whatever bad effects there are, the lutein will protect your eyes. It does you good and protects you from the bad…
Now, here’s a kicker - large doses of supplemental Beta-Carotene decreases the absorption of dietary lutein; therefore, can cause a lutein deficiency. So, what does that mean? Well, all the beta-carotene and carrot juice some of you are doing, while it initially helps your eyes it depletes lutein which in turn brings harm…go figure! God made everything to have balance, even carrot juice!
Now, the lutein content of the eyes declines in tandem with the progression of the aging process so as we age we especially need to supplement.
Finally, a daily dosage of 3 mg of lutein per day has been shown to help prevent the development on Age-Related Macular Degeneration.
Clinical studies have shown that up to 40 mg of lutein per day for improving the health of the macula region of the eyes is more than safe and aids the eyes as well as other areas of the body.
